    Well, 2014 is upon us, and–let’s face it–starting your commitment to eating better in the new year probably hasn’t really happened yet.

    I mean. come on, who makes a resolution and starts on a Wednesday? The middle of the week? so close to a weekend?

    And with so many holiday stragglers probably still lingering around your place!

    You know them well–the headless gingerbread men that you couldn’t give away (but you didn’t want to waste), your co-workers famous fudge (I’m talking to you Belinda)….your aunt Dot, who can’t resist making you her ancestral recipes for goulash and strudel.

    Because we are civilized folk, we are starting our smoothie adventure on Monday…otherwise known as “the first day of my new diet”.

    If you read my blog with any regularity (and, if you do, thank you for that), you know that I am not a fan of diets. They are a mean, miserable way to treat yourself and, well, they just don’t work. What I am a fan of is making small sustainable steps toward being a better eater. These can be simple, you know, something like “I won’t eat the whole pizza for dinner tonight”, or more challenging…something like “I’ll only eat half the pizza at dinner tonight”.

    I often find when I am talking to people who are trying to get healthier, breakfast is a big challenge. Finding the time for it and retraining yourself to eat it every day is not as simple as it may seem. That’s why I love the smoothie.

    First, it’s simple and portable. Second, they are a great way to trick yourself into eating more fruits and vegetables every day. Third, there are so many variations and combinations, it’s nearly impossible to get bored.

    So, here we are on day one of “Six Days of Seriously Satisfying Smoothies”. I start with a simple classic: Strawberry Banana.

    As the week progresses, we’ll get a little more adventurous with smoothies like:

    –  Pineapple, coconut, mint and avocado

    –  Matcha, peach and cardamom

    –  Pineapple, blueberry and chia

    Strawberry Banana Smoothie

    servings: 1 | time: about 5 minutes

    ingredients:

    10 large frozen strawberries

    1/2 of a medium banana (preferably frozen)

    1 cup no sugar added vanilla almond milk (or use skim milk if you prefer)

    1/2 cup low-fat yogurt (preferably Greek)

    1/4 tsp. pure vanilla extract

    1 tsp. stevia

     

     

    directions:

    1. Put everything in a blender and puree for about a minute
