I happen to L-O-V-E summer. To me, the sun feels like a life force from the sky and, were it not for the alabaster Irish skin I was blessed with, I would bask on a rock like a lizard.

But there’s something about seasons changing that presents opportunity for renewal. Whether it’s getting your warmer cloths out, collecting fire wood for cool nights by the fireplace, or stocking the pantry with hearty comfort-food ingredients, it just feels like a new adventure is about to unfold.

Not quite convinced that you should be happy about the end of summer and the start of shorter, colder days ahead? Here are some ideas that will (hopefully) get you pumped and ready to don those boots and wrap that scarf.

    1. Buh-Bye Bathing Suit. You hate it. You know it. Let’s face it, this is a hate/hate relationship most of us can do without. There ain’t enough sit-ups, lunges, squats and protein that can tame the cellulite that adorns the thighs of most women (90% to be exact. 90 PERCENT!). Even if you look good in it, you’re probably ready to trade yours for those spendy jeans you invested in (could someone please tell me what makes a pair of jeans worthy of forking over $200 bucks?).

    2. If you’re a parent….the kids head back to school amiright?! I’m not a parent, but even I can spot that barely-disguised look of  joy in the eyes of my neighbors as they get their kids on the bus.

    3. An extra hour of sleep. Ok, so setting the clocks back also means less sunlight during the day, but think about all of the things you can do with that extra hour. Maybe now’s the time to dive into that promise you made to yourself to start working out in the morning. And hey, heading to bed an hour earlier could be fun…

    5. Donning a cozy sweater (and that kick-ass pair of boots you bought back in July…for 75% off).

    6. Pumpkin or apple or squash in everything. I realize there are some very well known and respected taste makers out there who rail against the domination of pumpkin during these months. Whatever. I am unabashedly using pumpkin in pancakes and muffins, roasting squash with curry and kale, and whipping up apple butter no-bake cheesecake, and I don’t care who knows.

    7. Comfort food. See-ya salad…hello Shrimp & Grits, Moroccan Stewed Lentils, and Pea Soup with Harissa & Mint! When the temp drops, our bodies crave heartier foods and YES, they can be made healthier, making those 10 pounds we usually put on in the winter a thing of the past. (And that’s a beautiful thing, since summer will return before we know it (see #1)).

    8. Cool weather is perfect for outdoor exercise. No more excuses! Now is the perfect time to get out for a walk, hike, run, or bike ride. Lower temps are invigorating and hey, your body will burn a few more calories keeping itself warm, BONUS! (see #7).

Well, hopefully I have managed to get you excited about the arrival of fall! Even if you’re kind of weeping in your gin & tonic, it’s coming whether you’re ready (or excited) or not. Might was well embrace it!
