  • Fit Frest Fab Take on Takeout: Greek Inspired Turkey Burgers With Tzatziki Sauce

I gave up eating beef several years ago and, for the most part, I don’t really miss it. Well….except for the occasional burger. There’s something about a hot, juicy burger that satisfies an appetite better than just about anything else could. So, what’s a girl to do when a burger craving strikes and a veggie burger just won’t do? Enter a simple, delicious turkey burger with a Greek twist.

This burger is super quick to toss together, especially if you have access to a good salad bar at your local grocer. I was able to get all of the Greek inspired ingredients on the olive and salad bars at my local store, which made making this recipe even easier and more economical, since I could purchase only what I needed.

When making turkey burgers, I typically use 90% lean meat, since you need some fat to withstand the grilling temperature. Try to use whole wheat buns to up the nutrition content and be sure to make the tzatziki sauce ahead of time to allow the flavor to come together as you prepare the burgers.

1/2 small cucumber, seeds removed and diced
    1 clove garlic, minced

    1 TBSP. fresh chopped dill
    1 TBSP. fresh chopped mint

    For the Turkey Burgers:
24 ounces ground turkey (preferably 90% lean)
    6 cloves roasted garlic
8 sun dried tomatoes (preferably packed in olive oil)
1/3 cup pitted Greek olives, chopped
    1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
1 1/2 cups organic baby spinach, chopped
    1 1/2 tsp. dried oregano

    directions:

    For the Sauce:
Combine all ingredients and set aside while you make the burgers

    For the Burgers:
    1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and combine well (I roll up my sleeves and use my hands)

    2. Form into 4 even sized patties

    3. Heat a grill pan or outdoor grill

    4. Place burgers on grill and cook over medium high heat, about 6-7 minutes on each side (depending on thickness)

    5. Cook until burger reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees

To serve: place each burger on a whole wheat bun. Top with tzatziki sauce and serve with a salad and/or baked sweet potato fries
